Buffet vs dating apps

Buffet is not trying to be a better Hinge. It is built on the assumption that the failure point of dating apps is not matching — it is the gap between matching and actually meeting, where most conversations quietly die.

The short answer

Use Buffet if you want to meet people in person soon, you are relaxed about whether that becomes friendship or something more, and you are tired of message threads that never turn into plans. Buffet starts with the plan.

Use a dating app if your goal is specifically a romantic partner and you want to filter for that explicitly.

Why a group first meeting is different

A one-to-one first date is an interview with stakes. Both people know they are being assessed, and the format offers nowhere to hide when it is not working.

A small group at a scheduled event removes almost all of that. There is a reason to be there that is not each other, conversation does not depend on any one pairing, and a bad match costs you nothing because four other people are at the table. It is much closer to how people met before apps — through a shared activity, with friends present.

The swipe feed problem

Dating apps are optimised to keep you in the feed, and an endless feed is a surprisingly effective way to never meet anyone. Buffet caps what you see per day on purpose: a few people worth meeting, not an endless swipe pile. When the day’s list is done, it is done.

Whether that is a feature or a frustration depends on you. It is unambiguously less entertaining and unambiguously more likely to result in leaving the house.

What members say about the difference

“As the title says, this has been an awesome way for me to meet new friends, and a reason for me to try out new places. How has no one thought of this before? It’s like tinder - for friends!”

— bobbyg09, App Store review

Another reviewer describes it as “a fun spin on the usual dating/friendship/networking apps,” and a third notes that it “doesn’t feel like other apps where it can often feel a bit superficial and weird to connect with other people.”

What Buffet does not replace

If you want to date with intent — filtering on relationship goals, and meeting one person at a time specifically to assess romantic compatibility — a dating app does that directly and Buffet does not. Buffet’s 1:1 side gets you to a one-to-one meeting, but the app as a whole is deliberately ambiguous about what you are there for.
